“…an industry that reflects our passion.”

Advocating For Your Rights In The Fitness Industry.

Founding a New Voice for Fitness Professionals

We are establishing a national industrial association to represent fitness industry workers, modeled on successful approaches seen in other sectors. This structure allows us to operate immediately, providing representation and advocacy for fitness professionals, even as we work toward full registration with the appropriate regulatory bodies for additional powers and recognition.

Unionisation Matters

Throughout history, unionisation has been the most effective way to address issues like wage theft, wage stagnation, and protecting workers’ rights. Many of the workplace rights we take for granted today, such as the 8-hour workday, weekends, and paid leave, were achieved through the collective power of unionised workforces.

Union Membership Directly Benefits Your Income

Union membership also directly benefits workers’ income. Statistics show that union members tend to earn significantly more than their non-union counterparts, which demonstrates the power of collective bargaining and worker protections.

Globally, there are numerous examples of unionised workforces achieving outcomes that benefit not only workers but also employers, showing that effective unionisation can create win-win situations.

Think of union membership as an insurance policy for your employment, or like wearing a seatbelt when you drive—you might not notice it until you need it, but when challenges arise, you’ll be grateful it’s there.

You Can’t Represent Both Sides

Our industry has long faced systemic challenges, including a lack of adequate representation for professionals. Historically, oversight has been dominated by organisations that prioritise employer interests, often leaving workers without a strong voice. Professionals have been required to pay for systems that claim to represent their interests but, in practice, are primarily designed to serve business operators.

These systems have often been criticised for lacking transparency and accountability in their operations and outcomes. For example, compliance checks are limited, leaving gaps in the assurance of ongoing professional standards. Despite generating significant revenue, the benefits to professionals remain unclear.

Additionally, there have been instances where worker advocacy has been directly opposed, with resources being used to prevent improvements to wages and conditions. This reflects a broader issue where entities intended to support the industry have instead aligned with employer interests, sidelining the needs of professionals.

Why A New Approach is Needed

While there are existing organisations claiming to represent fitness workers, challenges remain in achieving meaningful change. Generalised unions that represent a wide range of industries may not have the capacity to focus on the unique needs of fitness professionals, particularly in a heavily casualised sector. Membership fees for these unions often reflect the costs of supporting large-scale operations, which may not align with the financial realities of fitness professionals.
Additionally, contractors, a significant portion of the workforce, are often excluded from representation due to legal and structural barriers. This leaves many workers vulnerable to exploitative practices such as sham contracting and unpaid entitlements.

How Are We Different

Our association is designed specifically for fitness professionals. By offering reduced-rate memberships for contractors, we aim to challenge unlawful practices and recover entitlements, such as unpaid superannuation. As secure employment increases, our ability to build collective strength and achieve better outcomes for all workers will grow.

We also recognise that a lack of management training is a significant issue in the industry, leading to poor decision-making and high staff turnover. We aim to address this by providing resources and training for both members and managers, creating healthier, more sustainable workplaces.

Transparent Membership

We believe in simplicity and transparency. Membership will involve a single, annual payment, no ongoing direct debits or hidden fees. Our finances will be managed by experienced professionals, ensuring that funds are used effectively and responsibly.

To maintain trust, we will issue quarterly reports detailing how funds are allocated to improve the industry and represent members. Members will also have voting rights on key priorities and spending decisions, ensuring that the association remains democratic and accountable.

Our Legal Framework

As an incorporated association, we have a legal identity that allows us to:

Enter into contracts

Employ staff

Hold property

Provide services and advocacy for our members

While we are not yet formally registered under workplace laws, we can still operate as a voice for fitness professionals. Registration is not required for unions to exist or represent workers but does provide additional rights and recognition. Our application for full registration is ongoing.

What We Can Do

Freedom of Association: Workers have the right to join and form associations, even if they are not formally registered unions.

Representation: Members can appoint us to represent them in workplace matters, such as disciplinary meetings, disputes, or bargaining (with employer agreement).

Advocacy and Campaigning: We will lobby for change, campaign publicly, and advocate for improvements in pay and conditions, focusing exclusively on the fitness industry.

What We Can’t Do… Yet!

Workplace Entry: We do not yet have automatic rights to enter workplaces for industrial purposes (this requires formal registration or employer permission).

Fair Work Proceedings: In some cases, we may need to act through individual members to participate in certain legal processes.

Industrial Action: We cannot initiate protected industrial action, such as strikes, under current laws.

Bargaining: Members must appoint us specifically as their representative in negotiations.

Our Commitment

We are committed to transparency, accountability, and making a tangible difference for fitness professionals. By focusing exclusively on this sector, we can provide the representation and advocacy that workers deserve.

Get Involved

We welcome support from fitness professionals and those interested in helping build this movement. No prior experience is necessary—just a commitment to improving the industry. Training and resources will be provided.
